Malvern Behavioral Health Center
As demand for advanced mental health and addiction treatment rises, Malvern Health saw an opportunity to transform an existing facility into a more comprehensive model of care. Originally constructed as an addiction treatment center, the building was reimagined to incorporate a behavioral health services unit, introducing more rigorous L2 occupancy requirements into a space planned for L1 use. The challenge was to convert the new unit to L2 standards while prioritizing reuse and keeping the addiction treatment center operational during construction.
Distinctions between L1 and L2 patient populations informed a layout that supports separation without sacrificing efficiency. Upgrades to air exchange systems, fire ratings, and smoke partitions brought the facility into compliance, while anti-ligature hardware and strategic glazing at nurse stations and along corridors enhance safety and visibility.
By aligning regulatory requirements with operational needs, the project provides a holistic behavioral health environment that extends the life of the existing facility and advances Malvern Health’s commitment to accessible, high-performing care.
