Wills Eye Hospital Cornea Service
The 9th‑floor Cornea Service renovation emerged from a clear need to modernize an aging outpatient environment while aligning it with the direction already established elsewhere in the building. Informed by standards set in recent renovations, the project translated tested planning principles and finishes into a space shaped by the daily realities of cornea care, all while maintaining continuous operations during construction.
The layout organizes exam rooms into defined care pods aligned with physician workflows, reducing unnecessary movement and improving efficiency. Circulation and wayfinding were carefully considered for patients with vision impairments, with wider corridors, clear sightlines, and smooth material transitions that promote comfort and ease. A palette of natural, biophilic tones reinforces a calm, welcoming environment without compromising performance.
Delivered through a highly phased process that avoided downtime, the Cornea Service demonstrates how design intelligence compounds over time. By carrying lessons forward and refining them with each project, Wills Eye continues to elevate care through spaces that are consistent, thoughtful, and deeply functional.
