D2 wins 2018 IIDA Award with Five Below HQ

  • Date 07.16.2018

D2 was awarded Best Corporate Office (20,000 SF and above) at the 2018 IIDA PA/NJ/DE Design Awards for the relocation project of Five Below’s Headquarters.

Five Below recently moved their offices to the historic Lit Brothers Building in Philadelphia to accommodate explosive employee growth. It was essential that the design of their 110,000 SF space attract and retain top employees. This was a great opportunity not only to build a space to aid recruiting efforts, but also to create a space for its current workforce – a young, urban demographic with a creative edge. The casual vibe – blending their modern brand with the vintage details of an historic building – created an iconic work environment accommodating CEO Joel Anderson’s request for “a space that won’t be forgotten”.

Their space within the Lit Brothers Building bridges three separate structures, combining wood construction with concrete and steel construction. This resulted in multiple floor level changes, movement in ceiling heights, and of course, shifting and varied exposed structural materials. In this unique building brimming with character, a strategic demolition and a careful construction process resulted in the salvage of beautiful, centuries-old layers; eclectic integration of the bright patterns and minimalist touches of Five Below’s brand add contrast to the gritty foundation.

Five Below needed a unique area for its merchandizing group—a creative space for creative people. Highly customizable furniture encourages maximum personalization of individual desk space. Inventive displays and ample storage help reduce the clutter of physical merchandise.

Youthful energy pervades. Diverse lounge and collaboration spaces balance relaxation with high-energy for what Five Below deems a ‘slippers-allowed’ work environment. Play corn hole in one of the lounges, grab a coffee at the cafe, or take in the Philly skyline from the rooftop deck—there are dozens of opportunities to chill, kick your feet up, and create.
